Cuomo<\/a> or not, Democrats are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/states\/new-york\/albany\/story\/2016\/12\/tony-avella-108094\" target=\"_blank\">already lining up<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/11\/nyregion\/weakened-de-blasio-may-be-vulnerable-to-3rd-party-bid-by-a-democrat.html\" target=\"_blank\">primary challenge de Blasio next year<\/a> so that&#8217;s going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>As to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billdeblasio.com\" target=\"_blank\">de Blasio<\/a> himself challenging Cuomo in &#8217;18, I don&#8217;t think he could successfully do that.  He is not popular enough in the City, much less the entire state, to do that. I could see him getting behind someone like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ericschneiderman.com\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Schneiderman<\/a> should he decide to run against Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p>At this point a primary fight is the only way I can see us ridding ourselves of Cuomo.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nygop.org\" target=\"_blank\">NY Republicans<\/a> aren&#8217;t functioning as a statewide political party and do not have a lot of well known people they could put up against him.  Even if they did, Cuomo would threaten the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenategop.net\" target=\"_blank\">Senate GOP<\/a> again and they would undermine their own nominee just like they did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robastorino.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Astornio<\/a> in &#8217;14.
