{"id":12756,"date":"2016-03-12T11:29:32","date_gmt":"2016-03-12T16:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=12756"},"modified":"2016-03-12T11:29:32","modified_gmt":"2016-03-12T16:29:32","slug":"safe-act-and-ethics-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=12756","title":{"rendered":"SAFE Act and ethics reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Due to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/city-region\/albany-politics\/angela-wozniak-faces-range-of-sanctions-after-affair-with-staffer-20160309\" target=\"_blank\">non-stop parade<\/a> of state legislators behaving badly, ethics &#8220;reform&#8221; is being discussed in Albany.\u00a0 Not only because of the sleaze and corruption, but with the secretive legislative process that hides how bills are written and prevents public discussion.\u00a0 Dick Dadey of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizensunion.org\" target=\"_blank\">Citizens Union<\/a> mentioned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saratogian.com\/government-and-politics\/20160308\/ethics-groups-call-for-reform\" target=\"_blank\">how the SAFE Act was passed<\/a> as an example of this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Dadey said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Cuomo\u2019s<\/a> SAFE Act gun law was an example of the typically rushed law-making on important issues. \u201cThe public not just benefits knowing what\u2019s happening, but laws are written in a way that they can enforce and make sense,\u201d he said. The SAFE Act, which was pushed through by Cuomo with no advance notice in 2013, was found to have numerous problems, including an inadvertent ban on police weapons and illegal requirements that healthcare providers report mentally ill people to the police &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is no way to know if we could have stopped SAFE from becoming law had the legislature allowed time for public comment, but at least we would have had a chance.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D12756&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
