{"id":12319,"date":"2016-01-05T10:03:07","date_gmt":"2016-01-05T15:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=12319"},"modified":"2016-01-05T10:03:07","modified_gmt":"2016-01-05T15:03:07","slug":"a-bunch-of-hot-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=12319","title":{"rendered":"A bunch of hot air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\" target=\"_blank\">El Presidente<\/a> issued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2016\/01\/obama_gun_control_order_here_a.html\" target=\"_blank\">his executive orders<\/a>.\u00a0 As expected it&#8217;s mostly hot air:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; Require gun dealers, whether they sell in a store, at gun shows or over the internet, to conduct background checks on those wanting to purchase a firearm &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is already law.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; The order will require people purchasing [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/rules-and-regulations\/national-firearms-act\" target=\"_blank\">NFA<\/a>] weapons through trusts or other legal entities to undergo a background check &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don&#8217;t know much about the NFA, but pretty sure this is already done.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ag\/meet-attorney-general\" target=\"_blank\">Attorney General Loretta Lynch<\/a> has written a letter to states urging them to provide complete information, such as criminal history, to the federal database that&#8217;s used for background checks &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why not send them a letter urging everyone to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/How-to-be-AWESOME\/?ALLSTEPS\" target=\"_blank\">be awesome<\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; To speed up and modernize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/about-us\/cjis\/nics\" target=\"_blank\">NICS<\/a>, the order directs the FBI to hire more than 230 staffers &#8211; a move that would double staff size &#8211; and complete technical updates to the database &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All this will likely do is speed up gun purchases <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2016\/jan\/4\/background-checks-gun-sales-record-high-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">which are way up<\/a> under his administration.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; Dealers are required to report lost or stolen weapons from their inventory but the laws related to guns that go missing during transit aren&#8217;t as clear. Under the new order, the licensee shipping the gun will be responsible for reporting it missing or stolen &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think this does much of anything.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; The White House is proposing to spend $500 million for increased mental healthcare services. Other provisions include reporting of Social Security information to the background check system, a move designed to keep those with mental health issues or who receive disability payments due to mental impairment from purchasing firearms &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\" target=\"_blank\">NRA<\/a> covered this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/articles\/20150814\/social-security-update-agency-backpedals-as-nra-and-pro-gun-officials-press-for-answers\" target=\"_blank\">several months back<\/a>. I suspect either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/articles\/20150918\/congressman-sam-johnson-introduces-bill-to-protect-social-security-recipients-from-the-obama-administration-s-most-ambitious-and-outrageous-gun-grab-to-date\" target=\"_blank\">legislative<\/a> or legal action will kill this.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; The president is issuing a memorandum to &#8230; increase research into gun safety technology. The memo also directs the agencies to promote the use and acquisition of new firearm technology &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t much this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/story\/defense\/show-daily\/ausa\/2015\/10\/14\/gun-makers-discuss-offerings-new-army-pistol\/73943028\/\" target=\"_blank\">already being done<\/a> for government purchases when they replace\/upgrade inventory?\u00a0 Any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2016\/jan\/4\/us-sen-markey-praises-obama-on-smart-gun-technolog\/\" target=\"_blank\">smart gun nonsense<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/01\/04\/politics\/obama-guns-congress-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\">not going to be funded<\/a> by Congress.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; The White House said the president&#8217;s 2017 budget will include funding for 200 new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm<\/a> agents to enforce gun laws. Another $4 million will go towards enhancements to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/firearms\/national-integrated-ballistic-information-network-nibin\" target=\"_blank\">National Integrated Ballistics Information Network<\/a>, which tracks evidence that can be used to link gun-related crimes &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This looks like a whole lot of nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The antis are not happy about this.\u00a0 See this op-ed at the Huffington Post, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/obama-gun-control_568b03bce4b014efe0db7356\" target=\"_blank\">Obama&#8217;s Executive Actions On Gun Control May Not Do Much.
