{"id":10757,"date":"2014-09-24T18:12:29","date_gmt":"2014-09-24T22:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=10757"},"modified":"2014-09-24T18:12:29","modified_gmt":"2014-09-24T22:12:29","slug":"safe-and-skelos-dominate-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=10757","title":{"rendered":"SAFE and Skelos dominate debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAFE and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senator\/dean-g-skelos\" target=\"_blank\">Dean Skelos<\/a> were hot topics in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalnewyork.com\/article\/albany\/2014\/09\/8553220\/safe-act-and-skelos-dominate-upstate-senate-debate\" target=\"_blank\">yesterday&#8217;s SD-46 candidate debate<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceciliatkaczyk.com\" target=\"_blank\">State Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk<\/a> and her Republican Senate challenger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgeamedore.com\" target=\"_blank\">George Amedore<\/a> traded insults and blame over the locally unpopular SAFE Act and public ethics during an hourlong debate at the historic Proctor&#8217;s Theater Tuesday night &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewcuomo.com\" target=\"_blank\">Governor Cuomo<\/a> wants to hear.\u00a0 SAFE is a hot issue all over the state despite media pundits trying to downplay it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; &#8220;I support the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">Second Amendment<\/a> and people&#8217;s rights to bear arms\u2014I do not support how this process was voted on,&#8221; Tkaczyk said. &#8220;I think there are some good things in the SAFE Act, like universal background checks, that provide protection for people to protect themselves from gun violence &#8230; &#8220;[But] it&#8217;s also important to acknowledge that there are things that should be changed.\u00a0 You should be able to put 10 bullets in your 10-clip magazine.\u00a0 I support the aspects of the SAFE Act that should stay, but I&#8217;m open to reform,&#8221; she said &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Has she introduced &#8220;reform&#8221; legislation?\u00a0 No.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0Amedore, a former assemblyman (and, very briefly, state senator), called the law &#8220;a complete infringement on our constitution and our freedom, our Second Amendment.&#8221; &#8230;\u00a0 &#8220;The bill was flawed,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The bill was unconstitutional &#8230; Take the politics out of it, the knee-jerk reaction, and let&#8217;s do it so that we&#8217;re not infringing on our Second Amendment rights.&#8221;\u00a0&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Knee-jerk reactions are what Albany does best.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; In her rebuttal, Tkaczyk pointed to Republican conference leader Dean Skelos, who represents Long Island, as the reason the bill passed &#8230; &#8220;In fact, your mentor, Dean Skelos, who is leader of the Republican party in the Senate, negotiated it, brought it to the floor and voted for it,&#8221; she said, to thunderous applause. &#8220;The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenategop.net\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Senate<\/a> put it on the floor, not me.&#8221; &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Credit where credit is due, she is exactly right.\u00a0 Skelos made no effort to stop it or even slow the process down.\u00a0 Republicans own SAFE as much as Cuomo.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D10757&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
