{"id":10070,"date":"2014-04-15T08:54:01","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T12:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=10070"},"modified":"2014-07-28T17:16:18","modified_gmt":"2014-07-28T21:16:18","slug":"meet-alex-crohn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=10070","title":{"rendered":"Meet Alex Crohn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/media.cityandstateny.com\/2\/75\/second-floor-nixed-commission-report-writer-for-internal-candidate.html\" target=\"_blank\">Meet Alex Crohn<\/a>, self-proclaimed author of the SAFE Act:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;An assistant counsel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Governor Andrew Cuomo<\/a>, who professed himself to be the author of the NY SAFE Act, was ultimately selected as the lead writer of the <a href=\"http:\/\/moreland.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Moreland Commission<\/a> on Public Corruption\u2019s December 2013 report after several independent candidates for the position were nixed, according to multiple sources within the Moreland Commission.\u00a0 Alex Crohn, the self-proclaimed author of the SAFE Act, had not been the Moreland Commission co-chairs\u2019 first choice to write the much-anticipated report the Commission released on Dec. 2 &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cuomo is in <a href=\"www.nytimes.com\/2014\/04\/10\/nyregion\/us-attorney-criticizes-cuomos-closing-of-panel.html\" target=\"_blank\">a bit of hot water<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao\/nys\/meetattorney.html\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara<\/a> over shutting down Moreland.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Crohn, a graduate of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard Law School<\/a>, came to the Commission directly from the executive chamber, where he worked under Mylan Denerstein, the governor\u2019s counsel.\u00a0 Crohn spoke widely with members of the Commission about his work in the governor\u2019s office, claiming that he played a significant role in writing legislation. He was particularly proud of his role in authoring The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, commonly known as the NY SAFE Act.\u00a0 \u201cThis is the hardest thing I\u2019ve had to write since the SAFE Act,\u201d several Commission sources recall Crohn bemoaning aloud on numerous occasions while working on the December Moreland report. Commission sources also say they overheard Crohn, who sat in the bullpen with the rest of the Moreland Commission\u2019s staff members, engaged in long conference calls that appeared to focus on the implementation of the SAFE Act &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interesting considering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=7844\">Cuomo blamed then Mayor Bloomberg<\/a> for authoring SAFE <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2013\/03\/25\/gov-faking-care-of-business-execs-fume\/\" target=\"_blank\">back in March &#8217;13<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cMuch of what\u2019s in the law was drafted by people connected to Mayor Bloomberg and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradycampaign.org\" target=\"_blank\">Brady Center<\/a>, not by the governor\u2019s staff,\u201d the source said. \u201cThat\u2019s why there are so many problems with it.\u2019\u2019 &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Looks like someone isn&#8217;t telling the truth here.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0 Crohn could not be reached for this article, and the computerized message that answered his cell phone number stated that \u201cthe person you are trying to reach is not accepting calls at this time.\u201d &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see why not.\u00a0 After all, the media keeps saying that there is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/opinion\/another-voice\/another-voice-safe-act-enjoys-public-and-constitutional-support-20140113\" target=\"_blank\">widespread public support for SAFE<\/a>.\u00a0 If that is the case then why not do a victory lap and get a warm fuzzy from the outpouring of love?<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D10070&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
