Political hit from Kingston City Council

The Kingston City Council has on the agenda for today a memorializing resolution calling for more gun control.

I’ve seen a bunch of these, mostly from the NYC Clown Council, but this one goes a bit further targeting local legislators (and by that they mean John Faso and George Amedore) requesting they turn down donations and campaign support from all “FOGs” (Firearm Ownership-Advocacy Groups) and return any previously received. Basically, gun owners should not be allowed to organize and vote on the issue.

Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon has introduced legislation to prohibit gun raffles:

“… “It boggles my mind that anyone would think this was a good thing to raffle off,” Simon said …”

The key thing here is that it boggles her mind, not those of normal, rational thinking adults. Raffles with gun prizes are common. I’m going to a shoot this weekend that is having one.

She doesn’t even give a reason for this in the justification statement of the bill jacket:

“Currently in New York State it is legal to raffle off a firearm in a game of chance. Many times games such as these are open to all individuals regardless of age. Firearms should not be raffled off in this manner. Firearm related violence is a significant public health and safety problem and weapons should not be given away in games of chance.”

Assembly bill is A-10091. There is no Senate companion.

Depends how serious he is

Governor Cuomo’s latest idea:

“… This year I have proposed a number of reforms, including preventing individuals with a history of domestic violence from purchasing or owning guns. Today I am proposing that New York extend the background check waiting period to up to 10 days, in order to keep our schools and our communities safe …”

If he is serious the Senate Republicans will cave so fast heads will spin. However, I am not 100% sure Cuomo is going to push the issue. He is proposing, not demanding like he did with SAFE, and it comes across like it is part of the usual budget negotiations where they throw lots of stuff up against the wall to see what sticks.

As sort of a follow up to my previous post, “Progressive Dems Question NRA Ads“:

“A coalition of progressive Democrats are criticizing TV ads released by the state committee that knock House Republicans over gun control over concerns the spots are a stealth campaign commercial for Gov. Andrew Cuomo … Democratic committee members questioned the effectiveness of the ad given its intent to criticize Republicans on gun control. “The ad buy is not targeted to a region in which there are close swing districts, nor does it mention any Republican by name,” the letter states. “It appears to be a re-election ad.” …”

That’s because it is a re-election ad.

Cuomo doesn’t personally care about gun control. His SAFE Act was nothing but a miscalculated attempt at raising his national profile for a possible presidential bid down the road. So is this. So is just about everything else he does. Cuomo isn’t an ideologue. He’s an ego-manic. The Democrat Party is nothing but a tool for him to advance his own political standing.

New project
