Gun Control Day coming soon

Gun Control Day ’10 will probably be next week on Tuesday and/or Wednesday depending on what time voting starts.  New Yorkers Against Gun Violence has their annual  lobby day scheduled for Tuesday.  According to their website:

“An estimated 250 students will lie down on the ground in complete silence for several minutes as a silent protest to urge state lawmakers to take urgent action and pass sensible gun laws to save lives.”

Big deal.  There were 10 times that when we did our lobby day back in January and, unlike the students who I’d bet are more interested in just skipping a day of school than in making a political statement, our side actually had to take a day off to show up at the LOB/CAP.

The Assembly floor calendar has not been updated yet so I’m not sure exactly which bills will get voted on in that chamber.  The new .50 prohibition bill A-9864 has not advanced from Codes since its reintroduction by Michael Benjamin back in February.  David Koon has not (yet) reintroduced the bills he killed last month either.

The Senate Codes agenda is out for next week and there are no gun bills on it.

Robbers run when citizen shoots back

Armed Citizen in Rochester.  From WHAM:

“Police are looking for two men they say tried to rob a 61-year old man on his way home from the store Wednesday night — only to have him shoot back — with his own gun … Police said when the two approached the victim, one grabbed him and the other pulled a knife. The victim quickly pulled his own gun and fired at the suspects. His gun is licensed and legally registered, police said. The suspects ran away …”

Endorsement for Ball

We’ve made our first endorsement for the fall elections, Greg Ball for Senate in SD-40 (Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess).  It’s an open seat.  He has to get through a Republican primary against Somers Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy and possibly former judge Jim Borkowski.  The winner (Greg) will face Westchester County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz in November.  Kaplowitz has run and lost before.  He also had an undesirable interest in “smart guns” while in the county legislature.

ORD 59.42.10 introduced

ORD 59.42.10 was introduced to the Common Council yesterday.  The Shooting Wire made a mistake in reporting it was passed.  The Times Union reports some people showed up at the meeting to give their opinions on the proposal.

Tom was on NRANews yesterday talking about it.

Desperately seeking attention

Nobody is paying much attention to gun control advocates in Congress.  This, of course, makes Mayor Mike upset so Mayors Against Illegal Guns has launched an ad campaign targeting a bunch of Senators in an effort to jump start the antis agenda.  Their goal is to end private gun sales (i.e. close the so-called “gun show loophole.”)

NewsCopy is hearing that Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone will challenger Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins in SD-35.  Amicone has been a big supporter of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.  Stewart-Cousins was previously endorsed by New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.

WPIX reporter Marvin Scott spoke with two of  Charles Rangel’s opponents, Democrat Vince Morgan and Republican Rev. Michel Faulkner.  On guns:

“… On gun control, Rev Faulkner said he supports some form of control, particularly since he came from Virginia Tech, the scene of a shooting massacre. Vince Morgan said he is “100% for gun control.” …”

New Albany gun bill to be introduced

A new gun bill ORD 59.42.10 is scheduled for introduction during the Albany Common Council’s meeting scheduled for Monday, April 19. It pertains to section 193 of the city code. I do not have the text of the bill yet and am not sure exactly what it is supposed to do.

Elderly couple hold burglar at gunpoint

Armed Citizen in Buffalo via WIVB:

“A suspected burglar got a lot more than he bargained for in the town of Concord. He was no match for a no-nonsense elderly couple. You don’t mess with 68-year-old Kathleen Smith or her husband Charles. Neighbors are grateful to them for holding an alleged would-be burglar at gunpoint until State Police arrived … Sgt. Kevin Streety of the State Police took a cell phone call from 68-year-old Kathleen Smith, who was holding the .22 caliber rifle while shouting orders to the younger Michael Smith, no relation … State Police say Michael Smith was caught with a crow bar, metal cutters, and a flashlight, and has admitted he was in the barn to make off with metal for scrap …”
